Thanks to the Internet, a universe of opportunities is now available to us—from communicating with friends and conducting business to online learning and innovative entertainment options.  Even as broadband speeds these things to us even faster, we rarely stop to think about how the Internet works.

What lies behind the scenes?  Here are a few highlights:

A Web of Networks.  Individual networks around the world connect together to comprise the Internet, with 1,400 private companies maintaining broadband facilities in the U.S. alone.

Investment and Capacity.  America’s broadband providers invested 120 billion dollars in communications infrastructure over the past two years—a contribution that fuels innovation and causes Internet capacity to double nearly every 20 months.

Power and Reach.  Just how powerful is the Internet? Every 15 minutes the Internet moves a volume of information equivalent to the Library of Congress’s entire collection of books, pictures, maps and manuscripts.  And, given the fact that the U.S. has 70 million connected households, it’s clear the vast majority of Americans are seizing the opportunity the Internet provides.
