As campaign season winds down, we're still surveying how Americans are collecting information for the 2012 election.  For instance, a recent Pew Internet and American Life Project study sheds light on how voters are using their mobile devices to access election information and participate in the political process.


A French company called Vupen recently tweeted a ‘for sale’ message indicating that it was willing to sell a zero-day vulnerability that it had found in the newly released Windows 8 operating system. This behavior crosses a new line in computer security research because the vulnerability is being sold before it is pointed out to the affected software vendors.


Super-storm Sandy rocked the northeast last week – causing catastrophic destruction and harm to many residents. For those with Internet or a charged cell phone, broadband played an important role in communications – as well as helping to drive relief efforts following the natural disaster.


Unprecedented numbers of Americans and candidates are using broadband for news, digital discourse, get out the vote efforts, and more. In USTelecom’s latest vidcast, we discuss how America’s democracy is thriving online. Here are a few highlights on this topic:

News & Information. Today, 41% of Americans seek news and information via broadband – a number that is second only to television at 66%.


A recent New York Times article discussing Presidential get-out-the-vote tactics in Ohio called this election “the most expensive and technologically sophisticated campaign in American history.” In these final hours of the Presidential race, one thing is clear: get-out-the vote techniques and Internet-backed technologies will be pushed to the limit.


The Minority Media Telecom Council plans a new task force to examine best ideas for helping  the United States become a world leader in broadband infrastructure, adoption and consumer protection. Participating in a panel discussing MMTC’s future policy goal, USTelecom President Walter McCormick observed that industry investment has been a bright spot in a tepid economy, with nearly $1.2 trillion in spending since 1996.


Despite laws intended to crack down on the problem, a record number of counterfeit components and technical products are being shipped to U.S. military and federal agencies. Numerous suppliers that have been labeled “high risk” have continued and even increased their sales to federal agencies. In 2011 alone, over 9500 banned businesses had sold technology to the U.S. government. The number and frequency of fake tech components in the market place has quadrupled from 2009 to 2011.


The future of voice services in a broadband-dominated world is prompting many questions about how quickly these changes will occur. Panelists at USTelecom’s Voice Innovation Summit explored the many technical issues surrounding this transition and other aspects of innovative voice services during a day-long summit.
