Understanding Internet Peering

The Internet Ecosystem for the 21st Century

Available on-demand until August 31.

Instructor: William B. Norton, Executive Director, DrPeering International and Author of "The Internet Peering Playbook: Connecting to the Core of the Internet"

USTelecom’s Understanding Internet Peering Seminar provides critical insight into the past, present, and future of the Internet... and your role in it.

Who should attend? Broadband providers, ISPs, telecom transport companies, legal and public relations professionals representing Internet companies, policymakers, content distributors, trade association executives, Internet start-ups.

Designed specifically for those with limited understanding of Internet technology, this seminar provides a solid foundation on the Internet’s infrastructure, or core of the Internet, and provides valuable insight into the complex system of interdependencies. Peering is a strategic business relationship whereby two parties (such as telecom or cable providers) reciprocally provide (free) access to each other’s customers. Traffic that is "peered" bypasses the metered Internet access service and optimally reduces latency, packet loss and Internet cost.  View a recent USTelecom webinar for an introduction to Internet Peering.

In this essential one-day course:

Defines Industry Terms:  A previous understanding of Internet peering is not necessary; the seminar provides a solid understanding of important industry terminology.

Explains Internet Infrastructure:  Learn about the various methods used to achieve interconnection and the role of regional Internet Exchange Points.

Outlines Business Motivations:  Using easy to understand terminology, the seminar delves into the business case for peering.

Introduces The Players:  The seminar highlights the modern day players, their power positions in the peering ecosystem, their corresponding motivations, and indeed their predictable behaviors.

Identifies Transit and Peering Tactics: The workshop provides real-world examples of how ISPs around the world manipulate their transit and peering interconnections. These tactics range from the clever to the unethical.

Shares the Peering Experience:  The seminar concludes with an interactive Peering Simulation Game in which four attendees assume the role of Peering Coordinators, build out their "company’s" virtual network, and negotiate peering with the other players. This audience participation activity has been used in dozens of international venues and has consistently been a popular and educational exercise.

Provides a Playbook:  All participants (in-person and remote) will receive a copy of the instructor's book "The Internet Peering Playbook: Connecting to the Core of the Internet."
