Statement: FCC Stops Rural Rate Hike

Background: Today, the Federal Communications Commission adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking which seeks comment on eliminating a rule requiring rural telecom providers receiving USF support to charge a higher monthly minimum rate to consumers than urban providers.

The following statement is from USTelecom CEO Jonathan Spalter:

“The FCC’s action today on the “rate floor” rule will help countless Americans living in rural communities. Requiring carriers to charge higher prices to rural consumers can be anticompetitive and the agency’s move to stop this increase is a welcome step in the right direction.”
